Friday Morning FYI – 11/20/2015

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is about interpersonal responsibility, complete with an unnecessary tech analogy:

Give unreliable people every opportunity to surprise you, but accept they usually won’t. When it comes down to it, most of us can’t go beyond our operating system’s limitations until something tells us it’s time for an upgrade.

Little writing exercise

I attended a new (for me) writers group a few months ago, and one of the things we did was an exercise focused on not-using dialogue tags. The idea was simple: your characters (a nun and a drunk) should be identifiable by what they say and how they say it, without you tagging their dialogue. I just found my text buried in Evernote, and thought I’d toss it up here. What do you think? Did I pass?

Who’s there?
Ugh, not so loud, will ya?
Who are you?
Sorry sister. Musta passed out. You should be proud. This might be the most comfortable dumpster I’ve ever slept in.
Saints, another one.
Another one what?
I told mother superior when that bar opened a block away we needed a lock on that fence.
And keep all this comfy trash to yourselves? Where’s your Christian charity? Not like you’re using it.
Please leave.
And go where? Ooo a chicken leg. How do you throw away a perfectly good chicken leg like this?
Please leave!
Fine. I’m going. God bless, sister.

Friday Morning FYI – 11/13/2015

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

It was hard to settle-on this week’s FYI. I’ve a lot of things and people (some real, others real-adjacent) swirling around in my noggin right now, each of which has taught or is teaching me something. So I decided to go with something teach-y-ish:

You can’t be a teacher to someone who’s not prepared or willing to learn, but you can always be a guardian, even to those who don’t (or don’t think they) need shielding – including yourself.

Friday Morning FYI – 11/6/2015

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is a little cliché, but it came across one of my feeds right at the moment I needed to see it, so I thought I’d share:

Don’t let others pull you into their conflict. Instead, pull them into your peace.

Friday Morning FYI – Special Wed, 11/4/2015 Edition

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

I’ve recently had several people ask about the stuff I toss up here, specifically wondering if the content that feels ‘personal’ is real (as in has happened or is happening in my life). The answer is Yes/No. Some things are real and some are invented. Some bits are inflations based on real events or people, but pushed beyond reality for artistic purpose. This brings up an interesting question, though – one I feel warrants a special post:

How much should we be willing to explain?

Writers (and any artists), covet a small group of friends and trusted colleagues to whom you’ll answer all questions, and leave everyone else twisting. When you explain to everyone how the rabbit gets in the hat, you lose the magic.
