Friday Morning FYI – 10/10/2014

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI! My chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is inspired by pleasant yet direct feedback I received for my book this week:

Don’t disregard someone being generous with their time and ideas, and don’t insult those gifts, for that’s what they are, by ignoring or refusing them.

Review: Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children
Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Prose – The prose in the prologue and first chapter is exceptional, but it flattens out after (it’s not bad, just simpler).

Story – X-Men meets Peter Pan, teenage love, Nazi (and some non-Nazi) monsters that want to be gods. All good elements, born from collections of old photos seen by the author. Inventive at times, cliché at others.

Favorite thing – The peculiar children. Entertaining and interesting. I especially liked Millard and Enoch.

Least favorite thing – Chapters are waaaaay too long for my taste. A lot to ingest and process in each.

Overall – Recommend.

Friday Morning FYI – 10/03/14

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI! My chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is writer-focused (if you’re not a writer, that’s OK, you’ll get the idea):

Writers, try to read like a reader, not a writer. Yes, this is harder than it sounds, but is especially important when self-editing, and when another writer asks you to look at their work.

Friday Morning FYI – 9/26/14

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI! My chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is dedicated to a fella’ I met last weekend and the 15 minutes of my life he ate while rambling about something no one at the table cared about (or believed).

Listen to and respect people who never force information but will answer questions when asked. Ignore people who stand uninvited in front of a room and scream what they “know”.

Thanks for reading.
