Friday Morning FYI – 12/11/2015

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s (long’ish-and-hastily-written-before-a-five-hour-drive) FYI is about daring:

Last week I wrote about a friend launching a book. I provided a few hints about the novel’s contents, and recommended you check it out. What I didn’t note was the book is self-published. I’m bringing that up because it’s important to understand how daring a thing that is – or more accurately, how daring my friend is for doing it the way she did. She hired a team, invested her time and money, and has done (and is doing) everything right to position herself for success. It’s not what I would have done, but while attending her launch event last night, I saw it was the right choice for her at this point in her evolution as a professional writer.

Where am I going with this? Just to note that in a world (profession, industry, sport, etc.) where everyone wants to tell you how things are done, you have to decide for yourself the best way to go. If you forget that, look to the people around you for a reminder.

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

It was hard to settle-on this week’s FYI. I’ve a lot of things and people (some real, others real-adjacent) swirling around in my noggin right now, each of which has taught or is teaching me something. So I decided to go with something teach-y-ish:

You can’t be a teacher to someone who’s not prepared or willing to learn, but you can always be a guardian, even to those who don’t (or don’t think they) need shielding – including yourself.

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is a little cliché, but it came across one of my feeds right at the moment I needed to see it, so I thought I’d share:

Don’t let others pull you into their conflict. Instead, pull them into your peace.

Friday Morning FYI – 10/23/2015

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is about the interpersonal dynamics associated with protecting yourself:

There’s a weird, Hollywood-created notion that implies the only way to be happy is to be vulnerable to the point of giving someone power of you. “You complete me.” “If you leave, I’ll die.” “My life would suck without you.” One of the biggest problems with this is how we expect everyone to act this way, and are stupefied when someone doesn’t.

Never be upset with someone for defending themselves, even if that defense takes the form of them walking away from you. When that happens, the problem is probably not with them.
