Friday Morning FYI – Special Wed, 11/4/2015 Edition

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

I’ve recently had several people ask about the stuff I toss up here, specifically wondering if the content that feels ‘personal’ is real (as in has happened or is happening in my life). The answer is Yes/No. Some things are real and some are invented. Some bits are inflations based on real events or people, but pushed beyond reality for artistic purpose. This brings up an interesting question, though – one I feel warrants a special post:

How much should we be willing to explain?

Writers (and any artists), covet a small group of friends and trusted colleagues to whom you’ll answer all questions, and leave everyone else twisting. When you explain to everyone how the rabbit gets in the hat, you lose the magic.

Drum-building workshop, 10/17-18

It’s no secret creativity takes many forms. I typically write, occasionally draw, and sometimes lose hours of my life to the hellmouth known as Photoshop. Not-long ago, I posted a cool piece of art my friend Rachel drew that was to be used for a new creative outlet (for me), carved into the side of a djembe drum I was going to build at a workshop in New Brunswick, NJ. Unfortunately, a rescheduling of the workshop and resulting conflict was to cause me to miss-out. Miss-out, until the conflicting event moved to the following weekend :).

On being a helpful reader and not an a-hole

I have the privilege to know several brilliant people who, for some reason, value my opinion and ask me to read and comment on their manuscripts. The problem with that is when I’m caught-up in my own nonsense, I can be an Omega Level a-hole. So, to remind myself and anyone else in that position to not-be an ineffective and potentially damaging reader, I’ve put together a list of guidelines to keep in mind. (Note: I’m writing this at 2:37AM, so if I ramble, there’s your reason).

More art, this time not story-related, but still bad-ass

At some point I FB liked a certain Yoga studio in central NJ. One day, a build-your-own-drum event (no, there’s no typos in there) they posted came across my feed. I’d never specifically wanted a drum, but when I looked up Djembes (one of the types you could build), and thought about how much I could annoy my neighbor with one, I signed-up.

Then I realized I needed a design.

Friday Morning FYI – 8/21/2015

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI comes from a pleasant reflection on a recent but feels-long-ago event:

Reciprocation is not inspiration. When someone does something nice for you, don’t just return the gesture, let it inspire you to something greater.
