Friday Morning FYI – 6/24/2016

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

I’m late today because I was helping a friend/coworker record a video. She’s enrolling in a holistic coaching education program that’s offering free tuition to a subset of students, and to qualify you submit a video explaining why you should receive the scholarship. I helped her tighten her (personal) story down for time, and shot her (with her iPhone) speaking against a backdrop of NYC. It was a neat, fun, creative project, and I’m thankful she asked me to help. That leads us to this week’s FYI:

Asking for help can be difficult, especially when it comes to personal stories. Be open to others, listen earnestly, and offer enthusiastic help where you can. That person is trusting you enough to take a chance. Honor that and it will pay off for you both.

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

I’m writing this to you from my favorite coffee shop, on a morning where I had day job work to do, to shop for some fishing tackle (rw shopping, not interwebz shopping), and to pack for a weekend camping trip. Why am I mentioning this? Because I got the work and packing done before 9AM, came to the coffee shop to write, and will go buy my tackle in a few minutes. In fact I’m only taking the time to write this post because I’m done writing for today (seven hundred words to finish a chapter). Nuts? Not at all. That’s this week’s FYI:

JK Rowling said, “Be ruthless about protecting your writing days…” I all too often hear writers complain about having “… just too much else to do.” Bull. There’s a lot of hours in the day. I know writers who get words down at 5AM. Get up earlier, have some coffee and breakfast, and get typing.

Or do you presume to tell JK she’s wrong?

Friday Morning FYI – 4/29/2016

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

“Are you a writer?” I was asked last Sunday, just before ordering my typical Americano. It came from one of the two guys behind the counter: the one making the coffees, not the one taking customer orders.

“Yes,” I said. “Does it show?”

The barista, who later introduced himself as Josh, smiled and shrugged. “Some people come in and open their laptops, and then type a little and talk to their friends and go on their phones and keep ordering things. And I’m like, how much are you getting done, you know? But you come in and order and then you just lock in and type and type. It’s cool.”

He wasn’t wrong. When I get in a groove, nothing around me matters and the words just cascade onto the page. In a good session, two thousand words over four or five hours is not unusual. *puts on his ‘support local businesses’ hat* That’s a two drink session, minimum, by the way (and probably a pastry, even though I’m not supposed to eat those), which often ends not because I’m out of words but because my hands are shaking from the caffeine and sugar.

Anyway, the whole exchange was fun and shed some light on something I hadn’t considered about writing in public (and anything we do, really). That’s this week’s FYI:

We all present ourselves to the world in both conscious and subconscious ways every day. The conscious is what you choose to wear, your haircut, the kind of bag you carry, etc. The subconscious, though, is far more important; the things you do naturally, like body language, work ethic, and purpose can inspire those around you. Doing your thing sends out waves others see and feel, whether we realize/intend that or not. What are you projecting? Is it how you want to be seen?

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

I didn’t learn anything this week. Well, nothing deep to put here, anyway. I know that sounds absurd to the, ‘Learn something new every day,’ crowd (of which I’m an adjunct member), but I’m OK with it (and absurdity in general, but that’s another story). That’s this week’s FYI:

Those of us interested in growth can put a lot of pressure on ourselves, which can occasionally result in feeling down or unaccomplished (I’m looking at you, writers-who-missed-their-word-count). It makes sense. Humans by nature are seekers, and seekers need to discover. But sometimes the best thing you can do is cut out the noise and just be. Lessons will always be there to be had, you can self-examine tomorrow as well as you could today, and that chapter will get written.

Friday Morning FYI – 4/1/2016

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI  (yes, I know it’s Saturday evening) – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

Man, it’s been a tough few weeks for people I care about. As I posted last week, several friends recently lost their jobs. This week, I got some rough news about two other friends. Being the nigh-insufferable know-it-all I am, I sat down to right something profound here, but all words are failing. That’s this week’s FYI:

When life has gone all pear-shaped for loved ones, we seek words to comfort or encourage or sympathize, but these words may be meaningless. Not that we shouldn’t try to help, or remind our people they’re our people and we’re there for them, just that, ultimately, without proper perspective, our effort brings no healing. So, perhaps, just listen to those who need to talk, provide understanding distance to those seeking space, and be a friend to a friend in the same way you always would.
