Friday Morning FYI – 10/30/2015

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

Last night I got the chance to see Trevor Hall live in NYC. I’ve been a fan of his for years, so when the spam email came in from bandsintown saying he was playing Irving Plaza, I took my wallet out so fast I almost lost a finger. It was a great show, and he even played and told the story behind my favorite song (Indigo) from the new album. In that spirit I’m going to keep it light this week and just drop a link to the song:

Drum-building workshop, 10/17-18

It’s no secret creativity takes many forms. I typically write, occasionally draw, and sometimes lose hours of my life to the hellmouth known as Photoshop. Not-long ago, I posted a cool piece of art my friend Rachel drew that was to be used for a new creative outlet (for me), carved into the side of a djembe drum I was going to build at a workshop in New Brunswick, NJ. Unfortunately, a rescheduling of the workshop and resulting conflict was to cause me to miss-out. Miss-out, until the conflicting event moved to the following weekend :).

Friday Morning FYI – 10/23/2015

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is about the interpersonal dynamics associated with protecting yourself:

There’s a weird, Hollywood-created notion that implies the only way to be happy is to be vulnerable to the point of giving someone power of you. “You complete me.” “If you leave, I’ll die.” “My life would suck without you.” One of the biggest problems with this is how we expect everyone to act this way, and are stupefied when someone doesn’t.

Never be upset with someone for defending themselves, even if that defense takes the form of them walking away from you. When that happens, the problem is probably not with them.

Friday Morning FYI – 10/16/2015

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is about the people in our lives friends loved ones:

When this goes live, I’ll be a few hours away from standing in a line with my dad and brother as sorry-eyed family and friends file past, offering sympathy, hugs, and understanding. All of that will, of course, be appreciated, but nothing will compare to the following text I received this (10/15) morning:

“I just saw the post about your mom and I wanted you to know if you need a shoulder to lean on or anything I’ll be there in a heartbeat.”

I tear-up (read: lose. my. shit.) every time I read that (yes, even as I write this). It came from my oldest friend, who I’ve known for thirty years, and I believe every word of it. She’s wonderful on every level.

These are the kind of people to cherish-the ones who will drop everything when you need them, even if you don’t ask, and even if you haven’t seen each other in years. But don’t just cherish them, be one of them to someone.
