How bad do we want our good guys?

Warning: Strong opinions ahead. And it’s long, too. Strap in.

I like my good guys good. Complex and conflicted? Cool. Messed-up history and/or in need of redemption? Want. Going through some terrible transformative sh!t that’ll properly mess them up forever? Gimme. But they still need to be good.

Killing defenseless people, even bad guys, isn’t a good guy trait. Read on to find out where this is coming from.

Friday Morning FYI – 1/1/2016

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

Strap in, kids. Personal nonsense ahead:

I normally don’t get sentimental about the new year, but some what-I-call big things happened to me (or around me) in 2015. A relationship ended, and another began. My mother went home, as did my sister-in-law. Books were read and written. A new friend blew in like the autumn’s howl and right out again, and other friends grew brighter in my eyes. Connections were reconnected. Offended a few, will do the same with this post I’m sure, and made some smile.

Obviously not all these things were good, but certainly not all were bad, and each taught me (or made me remember) something. For that I’m grateful.

Happy New Year. May we all continue to learn and grow in 2016, and keep moving forward.

Friday Morning FYI – 11/13/2015

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

It was hard to settle-on this week’s FYI. I’ve a lot of things and people (some real, others real-adjacent) swirling around in my noggin right now, each of which has taught or is teaching me something. So I decided to go with something teach-y-ish:

You can’t be a teacher to someone who’s not prepared or willing to learn, but you can always be a guardian, even to those who don’t (or don’t think they) need shielding – including yourself.

Friday Morning FYI – Special Wed, 11/4/2015 Edition

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

I’ve recently had several people ask about the stuff I toss up here, specifically wondering if the content that feels ‘personal’ is real (as in has happened or is happening in my life). The answer is Yes/No. Some things are real and some are invented. Some bits are inflations based on real events or people, but pushed beyond reality for artistic purpose. This brings up an interesting question, though – one I feel warrants a special post:

How much should we be willing to explain?

Writers (and any artists), covet a small group of friends and trusted colleagues to whom you’ll answer all questions, and leave everyone else twisting. When you explain to everyone how the rabbit gets in the hat, you lose the magic.

Drum-building workshop, 10/17-18

It’s no secret creativity takes many forms. I typically write, occasionally draw, and sometimes lose hours of my life to the hellmouth known as Photoshop. Not-long ago, I posted a cool piece of art my friend Rachel drew that was to be used for a new creative outlet (for me), carved into the side of a djembe drum I was going to build at a workshop in New Brunswick, NJ. Unfortunately, a rescheduling of the workshop and resulting conflict was to cause me to miss-out. Miss-out, until the conflicting event moved to the following weekend :).
