Friday Morning FYI – 4/15/2016

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

I didn’t learn anything this week. Well, nothing deep to put here, anyway. I know that sounds absurd to the, ‘Learn something new every day,’ crowd (of which I’m an adjunct member), but I’m OK with it (and absurdity in general, but that’s another story). That’s this week’s FYI:

Those of us interested in growth can put a lot of pressure on ourselves, which can occasionally result in feeling down or unaccomplished (I’m looking at you, writers-who-missed-their-word-count). It makes sense. Humans by nature are seekers, and seekers need to discover. But sometimes the best thing you can do is cut out the noise and just be. Lessons will always be there to be had, you can self-examine tomorrow as well as you could today, and that chapter will get written.

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI  – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is simply an unbiased recommendation:

If you haven’t already done so, go listen to the Hamilton soundtrack. Don’t get tickets for the show because you have more important things on which to spend a thousand bucks, but definitely give it a listen. Writers especially, as there’s a ton of important things you can learn about making your characters real. If you’re an Amazon Prime member it’s free, so you don’t have an excuse.

Friday Morning FYI – 2/5/2016

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is about doing things that scare you (not, like, wrestling a bear or something though; that sh!t’s nuts):

The book on which I’m currently working scares the hell out of me. Not because it’s monster/ghost/vampire scary, but because it’s the first thing I’m writing I feel might be beyond me. The MC is so deep and so damaged, and the themes are so relevant and poignant, I’m terrified I can’t do any of it justice.

And that’s kind of awesome, because only doing things at which you’re already good is boring. Except Snowboarding. And bowling. Either snowboarding or bowling when you’re not proficient mostly sucks. I know.

Anyway, yeah. Do things that scare you. Do things you think you can’t do. At worst, you were right. At best, you’ll surprise yourself.

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

This week’s FYI is a Copy->Paste from The Writer’s Circle. I normally don’t do that, but this image resonated with me and reminded me of a friend who doesn’t like to refer to herself as an artist despite her talent:

PS – Why didn’t any of you gentle souls point out I’d been titling this month’s FYIs as 2015!? I’m looking at you, Tabitha and Amy, my retweeting friends ;).

Drum-building workshop, 10/17-18

It’s no secret creativity takes many forms. I typically write, occasionally draw, and sometimes lose hours of my life to the hellmouth known as Photoshop. Not-long ago, I posted a cool piece of art my friend Rachel drew that was to be used for a new creative outlet (for me), carved into the side of a djembe drum I was going to build at a workshop in New Brunswick, NJ. Unfortunately, a rescheduling of the workshop and resulting conflict was to cause me to miss-out. Miss-out, until the conflicting event moved to the following weekend :).
