Friday Morning FYI – 3/25/2016

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI  (in under the wire edition) – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

A few friends recently lost their jobs. The one who knew it was coming had a choice. He could have kicked his feet up on his desk and thrown a middle finger at the company he felt betrayed him, or do what he did, which is go to work everyday and keep his responsibilitiesand team tight until the hammer fell. That brings us to this week’s FYI:

Life is really just a long series of choices. Some are generally unimportant, while others directly determine how you’re viewed by both your peers and yourself. Faced with adversity, make decisions you can most easily live with, and won’t keep you up at night worrying about the kind of person you are.

Friday Morning FYI – 2/26/2016

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI  – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

A few weeks ago, I FYI’ed about cobwebs. This morning, heading to the coffee shop near the train station, I noticed a massive shadow shifting and swaying under the train bridge. Turns out it was being cast by the same cobweb on which I’d previously reflected, blowing in the bullying morning wind. That leads us to this week’s FYI:

The smallest thing/word/event can cast an enormous shadow. Be mindful and take nothing for granted, but also accept you will not always see how the small things (or what seem to be small things) have huge impacts somewhere down the line.

And to my writer friends, don’t forget this when building your worlds. Not everything needs to be grand and obvious. In fact, the tiny things are often the most interesting.

Friday Morning FYI – 1/1/2016

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

Strap in, kids. Personal nonsense ahead:

I normally don’t get sentimental about the new year, but some what-I-call big things happened to me (or around me) in 2015. A relationship ended, and another began. My mother went home, as did my sister-in-law. Books were read and written. A new friend blew in like the autumn’s howl and right out again, and other friends grew brighter in my eyes. Connections were reconnected. Offended a few, will do the same with this post I’m sure, and made some smile.

Obviously not all these things were good, but certainly not all were bad, and each taught me (or made me remember) something. For that I’m grateful.

Happy New Year. May we all continue to learn and grow in 2016, and keep moving forward.

Friday Morning FYI – 10/30/2015

Welcome to your Friday Morning FYI – my chance to share observations/wisdom/rants in short, easily consumed form.

Last night I got the chance to see Trevor Hall live in NYC. I’ve been a fan of his for years, so when the spam email came in from bandsintown saying he was playing Irving Plaza, I took my wallet out so fast I almost lost a finger. It was a great show, and he even played and told the story behind my favorite song (Indigo) from the new album. In that spirit I’m going to keep it light this week and just drop a link to the song:

Drum-building workshop, 10/17-18

It’s no secret creativity takes many forms. I typically write, occasionally draw, and sometimes lose hours of my life to the hellmouth known as Photoshop. Not-long ago, I posted a cool piece of art my friend Rachel drew that was to be used for a new creative outlet (for me), carved into the side of a djembe drum I was going to build at a workshop in New Brunswick, NJ. Unfortunately, a rescheduling of the workshop and resulting conflict was to cause me to miss-out. Miss-out, until the conflicting event moved to the following weekend :).
